Amsterdam airport: Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS)
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is 15 kilometers southwest of the Dutch capital. It is situated in the Haarlemmermeerpolder and that is also where the name Schiphol comes from. A part of the former lake was named Schiphol, but what the name means is not completely clear. Some claim that it was a place where many ships perished. It is more probable that the name comes from ‘scheepschaal’, a ditch where ships were hauled from one lake to the other. Amsterdam Airport is the lowest lying major airport in the world, it is three to five meters below sea level.
Schiphol is the fifth largest airport in Europe when measured in total passengers, after Londen Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Istanbul Atatürk International Airport and Frankfurt. In 2015, almost 60 million passengers traveled through Schiphol. Amsterdam Airport already frequently gets the award of ‘best airport in the world’. The British business newspaper, Business Traveller, has gladly called Schiphol the ‘best airport in Europe’ 22 times since 1980.
