Macau International Airport doesn't only draw travelers wanting to place a bet in one of the city's (mega) casinos; it's also an important airport for destinations in southeast China.

Just like Hong Kong, Macau has a special status. It's part of China, but because of its special status people traveling to or from China need to cross the border.
