Girona airport: Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO)
Girona-Costa Brava Airport
First, here is a small explanation about the spelling of Girona. We are keeping here the Catalan spelling, but in Spanish it is spelled Gerona. The complete name of the airport is Girona-Costa Brava.
Girona Airport is in northeast Spain, 12 kilometers outside the city of Girona and 100 kilometers from Barcelona. It is an important airport for tourists that want to go to Costa Brava or Barcelona, and it is also the entrance to the Pyrenees to the north of Girona. Especially thanks to the arrival of the Irish budget company Ryanair in 2003, the importance of Girona has increased. Ryanair uses Girona as a junction for connections all over Europe. Passenger count was at its highest in 2008, when about 5 million passengers arrived at the airport. In 2015 the airport was far less popular, with less than 2 million passengers.
