In order to rent a car in Slovakia you have to be 21 years old. Some car categories have a maximum age for rental as well: 70 years. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge. Seatbelts are mandatory and children under the age of 12 cannot sit in the front of the car.
The speed limits are: on local roads 56mph/90kph, on highways 81mph/130kph and in cities 31mph/50kph. Most of the roads have 2 lanes and only 300 km of highways has been built so far. However, this is going to change in the future.
You have to drive with dimmed headlights in Slovakia during the day. Using a cell phone is strictly prohibited, even when using a handsfree kit. Beware of this. Drinking and driving is prohibited as well, there is no permissible blood alcohol content allowed.
Driving in Slovakia with a rental car
The capital of Slovakia, Bratislava, is situated in the westernmost part of the country, near the Austrian border. Vienna is very close by and is located at no more than 60 km. Budapest can be reached as well since it is located at 163 km from Bratislava.
Of course, Slovakia's inland has to be explored as well. Bratislava is situated along the Danube River and the Carpathian Mountains are nearby. You can indulge in beautiful trips in the region. Tourists have not yet fully discovered this country.
Another place of interest is the city of Nitra, with its chapels, churches and the Nitra Castle, which is the seat of the Diocese of Nitra. You will find this city at 73 km east of Bratislava and it will take no more than an hour to get there.
