Driving in Greece with a rental car
Driving through Greece is fun, the hills are beautiful and the panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea are impressive. However, there is a downside to the splendor. Greece has one of the highest amounts of traffic accidents in Europe. Those who land at Iraklion Airport (Crete) need not to worry, the roads here are excellent.
Depending on the place of arrival, a couple of nice trips can be made by car. The island of Corfu invites visitors to take trips along the coast. The blue-white houses that many people recognize from books and brochures are a striking sight during a tour around the island. The most famous areas of interest can be reached from Athens in the blink of an eye. The Parthenon on the Acropolis and the surrounding Parnitha and Penteli mountains are easily accessible by car.
Other places that can be reached are Eleusina (30 km from Athens), Piraeus (9 km from Athens) and Chalkis (these ensure a nice daytrip). Chalkis is connected to the mainland by means of a bridge, which has been like this ever since 400 BC (the bridge used to be made from wood). Chalkis is the capital of the island Euboea.
