General information and regulations
To rent a car, you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for one year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge.
Speed limits in Bulgaria are as follows: City 31mph/50kph, open Roads 50mph/80kph and highways 75mph/120kph. Traffic travels on the right, seatbelts are mandatory and child seats for children up to 2 years as well. Speed checks are frequent, as are checks on driving without a seatbelt or under the influence of alcohol.
Pay attention to footwear when driving in Bulgaria; it is prohibited to drive wearing high heels, flip flops or sandals (due to security reasons). Driving while wearing the aforementioned footwear may result in fines.
Driving in Bulgaria with a rental car
Bulgaria has a network of 8,000 km of roads and the country can be crossed in about 6 hrs. There are enough fuel stations along the way, every 20-25 km.
The trips one can make depend on the place of arrival. From Sofia, you can make a nice trip to the second-largest city of Bulgaria: Plovdiv. This city, which is built in traditional Bulgarian style, is situated at 131 km from Sofia and is therefore easy to reach.
Varna, the third city of Bulgaria, has an airport as well and is located at 378 km from Sofia. Trips are easily arranged from Varna, especially to the black sea coast. The fourth city of Bulgaria, Boergas, is situated at a small distance from Varna (88 km) and can be reached within 2 hrs by car.
